With the introduction of the NEP 2020, educators are hoping for an overhaul in the education sector in India. In the offing are better curriculum design and improvement in the medium of instruction of delivery, that starts at the very grass root level.

Until today, the Indian education system was working towards creating theoretically competent students armed alone with their degrees and certifications and no practical skills. The data ASER provided was further highlighting the darker side. Poor analytical, language and cognitive skills are just a few of the findings.

Traditional academic techniques have always emphasized on rote learning and have been confined to textbook curriculum. While we witness a paradigm shift in the recent two years of the pandemic, we are hoping the NEP 2020 has come around just in time.

Schools and institutions have experienced the biggest change in imparting education via online platforms since 2019. They have pivoted and excelled. Institutions who have adopted new technologies have also reported higher satisfaction in various aspects of delivering lessons during this phase.

EdTech has contributed to better learning outcomes and here is how -

Pre-recording video lessons, sharing resources with students in multiple digital formats like audio, video, image, text and presentations have opened various possibilities within a classroom setting. If a child misses one day of physical school, there is little possibility to revisit the learnings from the class teacher. However, with the integration of technology this can be made possible. Meeting recordings, sharing digital data and the ability to create digital resources with media banks is incredible.

Students and teachers closely connected with us have reported higher efficiency in teaching and learning with the access to digital tools.

How are teachers using technology to map student performance?

Traditionally, student performance was tracked over the years based on the grades he/she would score during annual or six-monthly tests. Little focus was given on tracking the milestones of growth and development throughout the year apart from the final examinations.

However, unless we plot the performance over the period of time and monitor every aspect of it, it is difficult to tell how the student is really progressing academically. This is also true for drawing conclusions for overall class performance, as stand alone data gives a myopic view of students progress. As an example, two students with a result of 80% on a report card depicts a good result wherein in reality it could be a progression from 70% to 80% for one student and diminishing from 90% to 80% for another. The same result actually gives a different set of interpretation, a relative comparison only will give a true measure of progress, it is important to track the data continuously over the years.

Students should be monitored through the years with tools that provide insights and indicate performance across various parameters. Indicators of their growth could be many for e.g.- their test scores in various subjects, throughout the years, performance in various competitions, parameters like reading, writing, speech or anything else that the teacher defines.

Performance measured over a certain period of time will give a relative picture of improvement, which will help in zeroing in on the actual problem areas and help in targeted correction.

Breakthrough with AI & ML

With higher demand for personalization to each individual’s needs, AI and ML seem to be adding better customization functionalities to digital tools.

Teachers now have steady insights into each student’s learning abilities, topic preferences, scoring patterns, interests, hobbies, academic and non academic skills. These technologies help track and monitor a student’s performance over various tests throughout the years. Thereby providing concrete reports and scores to teachers.

This enables teachers to make guided recommendations into a students academic conduct and continuously follow the insight to help students reach their goals faster.

Below given is a graph that has plotted class X`s academic performance of A+ graders based on each subject`s score. It indicates which subjects need attention V/s which are stronger areas. These graphs are automatically produced by the app after each test. At the end of the academic year, teachers and parents are able to see a child’s overall progress with cumulative reports.

Similarly, AI and ML are also able to track a students non academic interests based on his inclinations, his favorite topics chosen over the year in various assignments, competitions, projects and thus teachers are able to derive concrete conclusions and make recommendations.

Using technology to its full potential

Technological interventions can provide far better results than human interventions. Educators should be encouraged to use digital tools that best suit their requirements and regular feedback should be taken to facilitate learning.

Along with automating regular administrative tasks, AI and ML have proven to be successful in analyzing data to produce inferences for educators. With the value addition of insights that these tools provide, educators are now able to tailor curriculum for students based on individual needs and wants.

Technology is channelizing human capabilities and adding value by enabling guided research and findings. Adapting to efficient digital tools will not only optimize time and resources for educators but also improve student engagement, reduce administrative chores and facilitate better communication between all school stakeholders via one single platform.

Now is the time that schools should fully explore the potential of digital tools like Myelin that serve as teacher’s guide and mentor and help schools become more efficient.
